True ROAS vs Meta ROAS: what's the real difference?

Your Ads Manager shows a 4x ROAS. You're happy. But you're losing money. Here's why the ROAS reported by Meta, TikTok or Google is almost always overstated — and how to calculate your true ROAS.

What is ROAS? (Return On Ad Spend)

ROAS measures the return on your ad spend. A 3x ROAS means that for every €1 spent on ads, you generate €3 in revenue. It's the baseline metric for any e-commerce ad campaign.

ROAS = Revenue generated / Ad spend

E.g. €30,000 revenue / €10,000 ad spend = 3x ROAS

Why Meta ROAS is misleading

The ROAS shown in Meta Ads Manager is calculated on the gross revenue attributed to your ads. Several major issues skew that number:

1. Double attribution

Meta takes credit for sales that would have happened organically. The default attribution windows (7-day click, 1-day view) can double your ROAS on paper.

2. Gross vs net revenue

Meta counts the full sale price, before returns, refunds and Shopify fees. A 10% return rate cuts your ROAS by 10%.

3. No COGS deduction

If your product costs €30 and sells for €60, your gross margin is 50%. A 2x ROAS on the sale price = 1x on margin. You're breaking even, not making a profit.

4. Cross-channel traffic ignored

Meta takes credit for sales that Google or TikTok started. Without a centralized view, you end up doubling your budgets on every platform.

The 3 types of ROAS you need to know

Platform ROAS (the lie)

Revenue attributed by Meta/TikTok/Google / Spend on that platform. Overstated because of wide attribution windows and organic conversions it takes credit for.

⚠ Don't use it for budget allocation decisions

Blended ROAS (the reality)

Total revenue (all sources) / Total ad spend (all platforms). Removes attribution issues by taking a global view. It's the ROAS ProfitPilotPro shows by default.

✓ A good overall performance indicator

True ROAS (the ultimate goal)

Net profit / Total ad spend. It's the only metric that tells you whether your ads actually create value after all costs. Net profit is already after ad spend, so a true ROAS above 0 = you're making money. Below that, you're losing it.

True ROAS = Net profit / Ad spend

E.g. −€2,000 profit / €10,000 ad spend = −0.2x true ROAS

→ You lose €0.20 for every euro invested in ads

★ Calculated on your actual costs, not gross revenue

What's the minimum ROAS to be profitable?

Your minimum ROAS (breakeven ROAS) depends on your gross margin. If your gross margin (after COGS) is 50%, you need a ROAS of at least 2x to cover your product cost. But after Shopify fees, payment processing and shipping, your real breakeven is often between 2.5x and 4x.

Breakeven ROAS = 1 / Gross margin %

40% margin → 2.5x breakeven

33% margin → 3.0x breakeven

25% margin → 4.0x breakeven

ProfitPilotPro automatically calculates your breakeven ROAS from your actual costs and alerts you when a campaign drops below it.

How to calculate your true ROAS with ProfitPilotPro

ProfitPilotPro automatically syncs your Shopify orders and your ad spend (Meta, TikTok, Google) to calculate your true ROAS in real time. No spreadsheets, no manual math.

  1. Connect your Shopify store (OAuth, 2 minutes)
  2. Connect your Meta Ads, TikTok Ads and Google Ads accounts
  3. Set your COGS per product (or import a CSV)
  4. ProfitPilotPro automatically calculates your Shopify net profit and your true ROAS

To go further, also turn on server-side tracking via Meta CAPI. The event is sent from the server rather than the browser, so your true ROAS relies on data that neither ITP nor an ad blocker has filtered out.

Meta, TikTok and Google ROAS: why they never agree

If you compare the numbers in Meta Ads Manager, TikTok Ads Manager and Google Ads, you'll quickly notice that what they report adds up to far more than your Shopify store's actual revenue. Each platform claims the same conversions with its own attribution rules:

  • Meta Ads: 7-day click + 1-day view by default
  • TikTok Ads: 7-day click + 1-day view
  • Google Ads: data-driven attribution, sometimes 30 days

A customer who clicks a TikTok ad on Monday, sees a Meta ad on Tuesday and buys through Google on Wednesday gets counted three times. ProfitPilotPro shows a single blended ROAS that compares total ad spend (all platforms) with your actual Shopify revenue. No more double counting.

ROAS, NCPA and CAC: stop mixing them up

Three acquisition metrics often get confused:

  • ROAS: revenue / ad spend. A multiplier.
  • CAC: ad spend / total orders acquired. An average cost.
  • NCPA: ad spend / new customers acquired. Doesn't count repeat orders. It's the most honest metric for managing pure acquisition.

Compare your NCPA with your LTV (lifetime value). As long as LTV / NCPA > 3, your acquisition model is healthy.

FAQ — True ROAS and attribution

What is true ROAS?+

True ROAS = Net profit / Total ad spend. Unlike platform ROAS (Meta, TikTok, Google), it factors in COGS, Shopify fees, payment processing, shipping and returns. It's the only metric that tells you whether your ads actually make money.

Why is the ROAS in Meta Ads Manager wrong?+

Meta Ads takes credit for sales you would have made organically, counts gross revenue (before returns, COGS and fees), and ignores cross-channel traffic. As a result, the ROAS Meta reports is mechanically higher than your true ROAS. By how much? Only your own numbers can tell — and that's what ProfitPilotPro puts side by side.

What's the breakeven ROAS for my store?+

Breakeven ROAS = 1 / gross margin. 40% margin = 2.5x breakeven. 33% margin = 3.0x breakeven. 25% margin = 4.0x breakeven. Below that threshold, every euro you spend on ads loses you money. ProfitPilotPro calculates it automatically from your Shopify COGS.

Blended ROAS or platform ROAS: which one should you track?+

Blended ROAS (total revenue / total ad spend) is more reliable than platform ROAS because it avoids double attribution between Meta, TikTok and Google. But only true ROAS (net profit / ad spend) tells you whether you're actually profitable.

What's a good true ROAS in e-commerce?+

Read true ROAS against 0: net profit is already after ad spend and costs, so a positive true ROAS means the period is profitable and a negative one means it's losing money. At 0.5x, each euro of ad spend leaves €0.50 of net profit. There's no universal target: it depends on your margin, your fixed costs and your share of new customers.
